And I'll tell you this - I didn't increase my net profit dollars by 150% in 2 years by negotiating margin.
I did it by cranking hard on growth-focused levers.
I moved my net profit dollars from $30M a year to $75M a year because I grew my top line from $200M a year to $500M a year.
And I did that by negotiating the things that would bring my business
- More sales
- More opportunities
- Tighter relationships
Because what I discovered early in my negotiating career has stuck with since the early days.
I learned two things:
1. You can't deposit margin in the bank.
2. You can only squeeze so many pennies from the same dollar.
I got tired of haggling over that 0.25% margin.
My vendors and I would spend days - sometimes weeks - fighting over that quarter percent.
And even if they were a $10M account, that 0.25% only represented $25k a year.
But what if you can grow your business by 50% through a clutch negotiation?
